{Metro Detroit B&W Film Children’s Photography} Moving….

I am moving…..but not too far.

When I started this journey with black & white film I had a hard time coming up with a name that would reflect who I am as an artist and would describe the feel I wanted my images to convey.  So in order to have something to call my blog I chose to just use my name. However, in the last couple of months I have found myself describing my photography as having a peek into what a family is like on a Sunday afternoon.  And as I said this more and more I realized that that is exactly what I want my images to say.  So Sunday Afternoons Photography was born.

I am going to keep this blog open for a little while but will be transitioning these sessions  over to my new blog.

Take a look around here but make sure to visit me (and bookmark me) at

See you there!

{Canton Black & White Film Photography} For Dad….

I have known this family for many years.  Their third-born is the same age as my third-born and their mom and I were on the leadership team of our church’s MOPS group.  But they are about to move away.  Actually Dad is already there but Mom and kids are at home, finishing up the school year and selling the house.  I hate to see them go!  I will really miss this precious family.  At least now, with Facebook, our world is a little bit smaller!

I had such a good time photographing this family of four!  And to think that I met them when there was only one!  Their mom is one of the sweetest moms I have ever met.  Perhaps that is why her children are so happy and polite!

This first one just cracks me up….I think I told them to sit like statues and they did!  The second one is more like them!

{Livonia B&W Children’s Photography) The Waiting…

As the old saying goes the waiting is the hardest part(at least according to Tom Petty, anyway).  And with film photography that statement could not be any truer!  I have had great visions about how I want to implement my workflow…..from processing and scanning myself, to having the lab process the film and scanning it myself, to having the lab do both processing and scanning.  So using baby steps I decided to let the lab process and I would do the scanning with my last three rolls.  Except it isn’t that easy.  There is definitely a talent to scanning and I don’t currently possess that talent.  My first turn at scanning elicited lackluster results so I returned the negatives to the lab for them to scan.  And now I wait.

But quite honestly, lacking the scanning gene doesn’t bother me one bit.  For me the beauty lies in the finished print and not the proof scans.  My goal is to create beautiful timeless soulful handmade images that you hang on your wall, not store on your computer for eternity. So while I don’t love the wait I know that in the end I will love the results.  I know you will, too!

But while you wait here are a few from past sessions….

{Plymouth MI B&W Children’s Photography} Baby Completes a Family

Be still my heart!  I had the opportunity to shoot another family with a new little boy. I am hoping that you can gather from the pictures how much this little one is loved by his family. And I’m happy that dad was able to make it back in time for a quick family picture.

I always love the faces babies make!

The thing with film, I am learning, is that the wait can be so hard….like a child waiting for Christmas to come!  And that is where I am at this moment.  I have had four sessions in the last two weeks and I am anxiously awaiting (as are the family’s from these shoots) for my rolls of film to arrive back to me.  Trust me when I say I am stalking the UPS guy!

To appease myself I have been revisiting some of the shots taken from my first couple of film rolls.  I found a few gems to share to tide me you over!
